Types of senior independent living

A decent and affordable housing can also have a thoughtful impact on general well-being. Having the right and independent housing includes the ability to stay alert and engaged in community life, which is a great benefit not only to the individual but to the community as a whole. Given below are a few types of senior independent living one can choose from.

Independent living:
Among the many options available for the seniors to live in, independent living provides the greatest versatility and freedom. This is one of the most favorable senior independent living options. Senior independent living refers to residing in a compact, easy to maintain, private apartment, or other types of home within a community full of seniors. The housing arrangement which is designed exclusively for seniors (generally those aged 55+, while in some cases, the age requirement is 62+) are classified under independent living community. Senior apartments, mobile home parks, retirement communities, etc. are some housing options that can be classified under independent living.

Assisted living:
An assisted living facility provides care for seniors who need some help with activities of daily living yet wish to remain as independent as possible. Assisted living facilities aim to foster freedom and independence for a resident. Most of such facilities offer 24-hour oversight and an array of support services with more privacy, space, and dignity than many nursing homes and all this at a lower cost. Assisted living options are similar to independent living ones.

Life care:
Also known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), life care provides a lifetime residence in either a private residential setting or, if and when needed, a nursing care center as well. The private residence may be a flat, cottage, townhouse, or a single family home. The nursing care center can include any one or all of the following: assisted care, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s/dementia care.

Skilled nursing care:
Skilled nursing facilities, or nursing homes, may be independent or part of a senior continuing care community. In these facilities, 24-hour medical care is made available. Residents may be in residence on a temporary basis for a period of rehabilitation (short time) or may be there for long-term care.
