Arthritis has various conditions and severity of the symptoms can cause extreme discomfort. There are many ways to treat severe arthritis which include pain relief therapies, electrical stimulation, meditation, applying topical creams to the affected parts and shoes to reduce the pain.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is used to reduce the severe pain without taking pills.  This is a pocket-sized machine which sends electrical signals to painful joints by placing the electrodes on the skin. But care should be taken not to use the machine on patients with a pacemaker or some infection etc.

Steroid or corticosteroid injections such as cortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisone etc. can reduce the pain and inflammation caused by severe arthritis. These injections are directly given in the areas of inflammation. But care should be taken that these injections should be limited to two or three per year as the heavy dosage of these injections can make the ligaments and tendons fragile which may rupture in the course of time.

By taking some injections such as Hyarulonic acid injections, the pain and inflammation caused by severe arthritis can be controlled. This acid is slippery in nature and the injections such as Synvisc, Hyalgan, Supartz etc. can be used to reduce the severe pain. This injection repairs the damaged knee joints by repairing the damaged cartilage. But care should be taken about the allergies and infections caused by these injections

Injecting the anesthesia and lidocaine, or anesthesia and corticosteroid into muscles which are trigger points of severe pain can reduce the pain in a short span. The injections are also given to the nerves where there is severe arthritis pain. The local anesthesia and steroid injections can reduce the severe pain.
Radiofrequency heat energy can be used by the physician to destroy painful nerves. The radio waves are injected through a needle which blocks the signals of pain. This treatment can be beneficial in cases of severe arthritis.

Using heat and cold compression with the help of heating pads and ice blocks can reduce the pain caused by severe arthritis. Medication along with designed pain management can reduce the pain caused by the symptoms of severe arthritis.
